Day 4: Portland, OR to Cascade Locks, OR: Into The Gorge

Updated: Jul 23, 2023

Thursday June 8, 2023, 55 miles (89 km) - Total so far: 168 miles (270 km)

Todays Route:

Our ride out of Portland was mostly on a great bike path beside Marine Drive which took us north past the airport and along the Sandy River. At mile 20 we hit Troutdale, a quaint little town where we stopped for lunch at Sugarpine Drive-In - Sharon had a healthy salad, and I couldn’t resist the Waffle Grilled Cheese sandwich! The next 35 miles were amazing - along Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail which paralleled Rt. 84 but had very little traffic and provided both views of the Columbia River Gorge and many waterfalls. Overall, the route was pretty flat out of Portland with some climbing along Columbia River Highway. We ended our day in Cascade Locks and are staying at The Bridge of Gods Motel and “Luxury Cabins.” I’ve added the quotation marks 😉

Great dinner at Thunder Island Brewery across the street.

Weather:

Another picture perfect day for riding; partly sunny, 60s and 70s, and plenty of shade on the second half of the route.

Riding conditions/traffic:

Again, a good portion of the route was on protected trails and rides were relatively light in terms of traffic. Very comfortable ride.
