Day 50: Interior, SD to Murdo, SD

July 19, 2023

78 miles

1,822 miles so far

Badlands to the Grasslands and a lot of grasshoppers!

We had a long day ahead of us with a 78 mile ride out of the Badlands and into the grasslands ending in Murdo, SD. We left early and rode the 8 miles up to the Badlands visitor center and cafe for a quick breakfast before the short loop through the Badlands National Park. Our morning started with some short but very steep climbs through the park. The views of the Badlands were amazing! Again, I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves!

After leaving the Badlands park it was a straight shot to Murdo on HW248 which paralleled HW90. We had been told that South Dakota was hilly, and today we experienced it first hand - rolling hill after rolling hill!

The other highlight of our ride today was the immense number of grasshoppers jumping and flying off the road as we passed. I felt like a car windshield being pelted by grasshoppers. They were bouncing off our legs, chests and even our helmets and sunglasses! Later when I was cleaning and lubing my chain and rear derailleur, I had to dislodge several grasshopper remnants.

We spent the night in Murdo at Range Country Lodging and had a fine dinner of hamburgers and ice cream at the Circle-E Drive In Diner just down the road.
