35 miles

1,900 miles so far

Today’s route took us across the “Mighty Missouri River” into Chamberlain, SD. We were able to take HW248 which is a less trafficked frontage road to HW90 for the first 25 miles or so. As this frontage road ended just past Reliance, SD, we were forced onto HW90 for about 10 miles. Although busier, the shoulders were very wide making for a comfortable ride. We exited 90 at Oacoma in order to take “the old bridge” across the river. As we descended toward the bridge, we had a great view of the river which had a beautiful aquamarine color.

Just over the river we decided to stop for lunch at The Smoking Mule and marina. After enjoying a delicious lunch and our 22oz ciders, we realized we had another five miles to the hotel. Following Google maps’ bicycling directions we were routed onto several miles of gravel roads followed by a final steep climb up to the AmericInn. After my big lunch I settled for a burger and ice cream for dinner at DQ, just a short walk from the hotel.
