Day 65: Namakagon, WI (Buffalo Lake) to Mercer, WI

Aug 6 blog

Namakagon, WI (Buffalo Lake) to Mercer, WI

59 miles

2,597 miles so far

We started our day with a wonderful bacon, eggs, hash browns, fruit and coffee breakfast prepared by our hosts, Jeff and Kristin Dahl.

Today’s plan was to ride to Mercer with stops in Glidden, to see a record setting black bear and in Butternut for lunch. The cafe we planned to have lunch at was closed on Sunday, so instead we rode to the Filling Station where we could have a sandwich and ice cream. When we got there we saw a paper note on the door - “Closed we will reopen between 1:30 and 2 pm after the Lambeau parade.” So we opened our panniers and ate from our food provisions - they opened just as we finished, but I had saved room for an ice cream cone of course!

The weather was great today - overcast and cool with highs in the 70s.

We made it to the Cranberry Inn Motel which was very nice. It had clearly been recently renovated with lots of pine wood finishes and bear clad bedspreads. We set off for a few more miles of riding to have dinner at the Pines where we had fantastic German food..I had roasted duck, dumplings, spaetzle, dressing, sauerkraut and a beer for dinner!!!

They also had a nice beer garden out back with live entertainment. A nice man who we met at the bar waved us over to join him and his friend. He had retired to the area and learning of our journey and fork in the road, he highly encouraged us to take the route up into the UP and over to Mackinac Island.
