Day 70: Manistique, MI to Epoufette, MI

Aug 12 blog

59 miles

2,903 miles so far

As the forecast was better today - windy but no rain - we decided to take our time and have the hotel breakfast. Our directions for today were easy - pull out of the parking lot onto HW2 and keep going east until you get to Epoufette! While it has a nice wide shoulder, the highway is heavily trafficked and very noisy which wears on you.

We stopped in Naubinway for lunch at a restaurant called Moofinfries. The “Moo” refers to the delicious hamburgers which are harvested from the owners own grass-fed cows. The “fin” refers to the fried fish on the menu, and of course, “fries” refers to the fresh, hand cut French fries. We had the hamburgers and fries, and then could t resist the ice cream. The ice cream was so good, I asked the owner if they made it. He laughed and said there weren’t enough hours in the day. However, he did tell me that the reason it tasted so good was that it had a higher butter fat content than most ice creams and that it was made in Ludington, MI. While this lunch sounds like many others we’ve had along the tour, I can attest that their burgers and fries were some of the best I’ve ever had! I must say that I was a little worried about my body’s ability to digest all this heavy food while riding another 10 miles or so. We managed.

Tonight we were staying at the Skyline Motel which was an older motel that sat up on a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan. We could see the lake from our window!

We had dinner at the Rivercut Inn right across the street which was US Route 2. I tried a beef pasty with gravy, as I had heard about them from our friend Lisa Reel who was from Michigan. I enjoyed it. It’s essentially like an upside down pot pie! Sharon had the only thing that wasn’t fried or made with flour which was the whitefish.

We then had coffee and rice pudding across the street at the Epoufette Bayview Inn, which delivered on its name with a view of Lake Michigan. Then we called it a night, as we planned to get a very early start tomorrow.
