Day 81: Pittsford, NY to Fairhaven, NY

Aug 26 blog

70 miles

3,502 miles so far

The weather was clearing as we set out in the morning, and we had a beautiful day for our long ride north to the coast of Lake Ontario. It was a quiet morning along the canal in Pittsford where it had been a buzz of activity the night before. Again, we rode along the canal until the town of Palmyra, NY where we would leave the canal and begin our ride north. It was also a good place to stop and re-provision.

As I stopped to take a picture of one of the bridges across the canal, we met Dave and Barb Gingrich from Delaware who were riding the entire Northern Tier Route from Anacortes, WA to Bar Harbor, ME. They are experienced bike tourers having some a one or two week bike tour each of the last twelve years. Finally, they had decided to do their epic tour across the country. As we were comparing notes and talking about the upcoming climb through the Middlebury Gap in the Green Mountains of Vermont, Dave informed us that Adventure Cycling had recently changed the official route to cross through the Brandon Gap south of Middlebury. He suggested that the change was due to road closings as a result of the recent flooding in Vermont. Thank goodness we ran into Dave and Barb!!

After Palmyra, we made another stop in Williamson at a place called Sunny’s Donuts and Cafe. We both had eggs BUT I had the best lemon-filled powder donut I have ever eaten!!! Truly. Here Russell Marcelo (aka Sunny) has baked donuts since he was 16 and learned how to make them from his father. If you’re ever in Williamson, NY, it’s a must try!

We made another pit stop at the Burnap Fruit Farms where we saw Dave and Barb enjoying a rest in the sun and presumably a much healthier meal than I’d had. Although they did tell us that they usually got an early start and ate their breakfasts at gas stations.

If you hadn’t noticed, as we’ve ridden further east the variety and quality of our food options have improved dramatically…and we are partaking!

We spent the night at a B&B called Fairhaven Village Inn and had a nice dinner at Little Sodus Inn which sat on the shoreline of Little Sodus Bay.
