Day 82: Fairhaven, NY to Pulaski, NY

Aug 27 blog

44 miles

3,546 miles so far

Today’s Route would take us north along Lake Ontario, across the Salmon River at Port Ontario and then East to Pulaski, NY.

After retrieving our bikes from the shed behind the Inn, I washed the bikes with the outdoor hose before loading our bikes. They were in desperate need of a bath after all the mud on the Erie Canal trail.

We stopped for a good breakfast at the Village Grill of Fairhaven before setting out, as we expected to be eating lunch from our dwindling provisions (tuna fish, chips, etc) roadside today.

We stopped in New Haven not far from the coast of Lake Ontario for lunch where we found a shady spot under the trees behind a Post Office. As we were eating, we noticed an older woman approaching from the house next door. We feared she might be coming to tell us we couldn’t hang out there. Rather Margo had seen us and came to see if we needed water, to use the bathroom or anything else. Good Samaritan of the day!

She shared that she had a niece, Sue Grandjean, who had been a world class bike racer and cross country skier, competing globally in ski orienteering (SkiO). As it turns out, she now lives in Portland, OR, not far from where our daughter, Meghan, lives.

We arrived in Pulaski around 3pm at the door of our Airbnb apartment. We called the Airbnb host per the check-in instructions. Unfortunately, the host was unresponsive to both phone calls and text messages. After an hour of standing in the sun waiting and discussions with Airbnb customer service, we were assured a full refund and reimbursement of our hotel cost for the night. Fortunately, we found a room at a Super8 about a mile and a half away.
