Day 88: Rochester, VT to Hanover, NH

Sep 3 blog

Rochester, VT to Hanover, NH

52 miles

3,839 miles so far

Today our plan was to ride from Rochester to Lyme, NH, just over the Connecticut River. We would have a few detours along the way.

The ride started out relatively flat with a few hills for the first 30 miles which brought us to a town called Sharon which was chartered in 1761! We stopped there for our roadside lunch, which in this case, we had in the shade of an old church gazebo. From there the climbing began!

We had to traverse a series of “stair step” steep hills.

We pulled over when we saw the “road closed” sign blocking our route forward. As we’re wondering what to do, we saw and flagged down two cyclists coming down the hill from the other direction. They were two locals, Jo and Chip. Chip rode a recumbent bike and Jo was riding a beautiful custom titanium Seven. Among other things, they shared that their “bike team name” was “Clewis and Lark”. We got a kick out of that and shared that we were the original Lewis and Clark! They ride these hills almost daily and we’re getting themselves ready for their upcoming bike trip out to Seattle’s Olympic Peninsula and the San Juan Islands.

They assured us that we could use the closed road, as it was still open to cyclists. However, they informed us that the bridge across the river to Lyme was closed to to the recent flooding. We discussed the various alternatives of crossing further north or south.

Ultimately, we decided to ride south and crossed the river into Hanover NH onto the campus of Dartmouth College. We wound our way through the campus which was buzzing with students just arriving for the Fall session. What a beautiful college campus.

We checked into the Sixth South Hotel nearby and went to dinner at Molly’s, a local Italian/pizza place. We noticed several groups of Appalachian Trail hikers stopping in town at both the restaurant and hotel.

Pretty ride out of Rochester
